About Us

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric Dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. Dr. Daniel has three years of specialty education after dental school to focus his career on the treatment of children’s dental needs. A Pediatric Dentist’s area of expertise lies in being the main provider for babies, toddlers, children and teens together with those with unique health requirements.

At Burlington Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s oral health care is the priority. You are setting your child up for success by establishing us as your child’s dental home. That gives us the chance to put into practice defensive dental routines that keep your child protected from dental/oral disease. With advanced technologies and tools we are able to stay abreast to the developments in dentistry for children. Through the aid of these tools and developments, Dr. Daniel can better detect and treat diseases and remain concentrated on prevention. Our goal is to help your children feel comfortable and safe when visiting us.

By starting scheduled visits to the dentist at a young age, you set your child up for a lifetime of healthy dental behaviors. Your first visit to Burlington Pediatric Dentistry should leave a lasting positive impression for both you and your child. You should plan to schedule your first appointment upon the eruption of the first tooth or no later than your child’s first birthday.

About Dr. Daniel Charland, BMSc., DDS, Cert. Ped. Dent., MS, FRCD(C)

I grew up in the Greater Toronto Area, am the second of four siblings, a husband, a father and an uncle of five. From my first dental experiences (late by today’s standards) I found the dental profession and gadgetry intriguing. As a young student, my interests always leaned toward the sciences and wanting to answer the question: “how does it work” for all objects. My active childhood led into my late teen years of instructing others (primarily children) how to do the things I loved most (skiing, snowboarding and swimming).

As I furthered my education I knew I wanted to maintain the simple joy of working with children daily and was fortunate to find a profession that embodied my academic interests and my passion for teaching and coaching – Pediatric Dentistry. In a nutshell, as a Pediatric Dentist, my goal is to guide children and their parents along the path of oral health.

Burlington Pediatric Dentistry

I truly love working with children of all ages and appreciate the importance of a parent being comfortable with their child’s dental treatment. Upon completion of my education, I practiced in a Pediatric Dental clinic for two and a half years in Calgary, Alberta. In the spring of 2014, Burlington became my permanent home, and I opened Burlington Pediatric Dentistry that September. As an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, biking, rock climbing, skiing and more, you will find me cycling to work and exploring all the ways to be active in the community.

I look forward to meeting you and love being a part of the Burlington community!

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. Daniel Charland

My academic career is never over, but the formal part was a continuous, linear, eleven years of post-secondary education. I attended the University of Western Ontario for undergraduate studies in Medical Sciences, followed by earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Toronto.

I continued to pursue my dream at the University of California San Francisco, where I earned a Masters in Science and Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. My research thesis was a clinical trial on novel methods of caries prevention.

I am a Fellow in Pediatric Dentistry of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, which is the examining body that certifies dental specialists in Canada and am licensed in Ontario as a Pediatric Dentist.

As of 2016, I am an examiner for the RCDC in Pediatric Dentistry.

(UofT, UofP)

I currently hold two academic positions. I am a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific, San Francisco CA, where I teach clinical skills and facilitate seminars.

I have given mutliple lectures on Infant Oral Health and Caries Management by Risk Assessment to the Burlington Dental Academy, the Calgary and District Dental Society and study clubs. Returning to the academic clinic and classroom allows me to give back to the dentistry community and stay current in practice.

Burlington Pediatric Dentistry is proud to introduce the newest member to our family – meet Dr. Charis Luk!

I am passionate about children. I find it a blessing to interact with and provide care for children of different ages.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Mississauga, I obtained my Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree at the University of British Columbia. After working as a general dentist for two years, my passion for children has led me to pursue advanced specialty training at the University of British Columbia to become a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry. During my concurrent training at the BC Children’s Hospital, I provided care and treatment for children with special needs that had medical and behavioral challenges.

I am active with the current research. My research on methods to lower parental anxiety for their child’s dental appointment has earned the prestigious Sunstar Research Fellowship Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry .

I am also dedicated to educating the future dentists. I serve as a clinical instructor in the graduate pediatric dental clinic at the University of Toronto.

I am an active member of the following associations:

  • The Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
  • The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
  • The Canadian Dental Association
  • The Ontario Dental Association
  • The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
  • The Royal College of Dentists of Canada

When not in the clinic, I enjoy playing the piano and exploring the nature with my family and friends.

I look forward to meeting and serving all the families at BPD!
